After the great success of last year we have once again descended on the three major freshers' fairs taking place across the city! Hoping to round up as many students as possible the Birmingham cutting CO2 team hit the University of Birmingham, Aston University and BCU in the past week to encourage as many people as possible to cut both their CO2 and their household bills. Last year over 500 students signed up to the campaign and we have a new record as for 2008 we already have nearly 700 who have pledged!
Be Birmingham backs UK CO2 cut
Chair of Be Birmingham, Councillor Paul Tilsley has welcomed the announcement that Government is to increase its target for cutting the UK’s carbon emissions from 60% to 80% by 2050.
The news comes less than one week after Cllr Tilsley met with Lord Hunt, Minister of State for Sustainable Development, Climate Change Adaptation and Air Quality at
FortDunlop.
Cllr Tilsley, also deputy leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “We'd like to congratulate the Government for taking the brave decision to up the ante and set an even more challenging target. We long believed that the original target was not challenging enough, which was why we have committed to achieving a 60% reduction by 2026.
“We look forward to working closely with the new Secretary of State and his Department toward achieving the new targets not just in Birmingham, but in the country at large.
“Tackling climate change is one of the most important challenges we face today, which is why Birmingham has taken such a proactive role in addressing the issue. From hosting the UK’s first ever climate change festival to our membership of the Clinton Initiative and the ongoing roll-out of energy efficient combined heat and power schemes we are determined to take a lead in seeking out groundbreaking initiatives to meet this all important challenge.”
